An airbag clock spring, also known as a spiral cable or clockspring, is a crucial component in the airbag system of a 1997 to 2004 Chevrolet Corvette (C5 generation). The clock spring is located in the steering column, behind the steering wheel. Its primary function is to maintain a continuous electrical connection between the vehicle’s wiring harness and the airbag, horn, and any other steering wheel-mounted controls, while still allowing the steering wheel to rotate freely.
The clock spring consists of a flat, coiled ribbon of conductive material that is wound around a central hub. As the steering wheel turns, the ribbon winds and unwinds, enabling the electrical connection to remain intact. Over time, clock springs can wear out or become damaged, which may result in airbag warning lights, non-functional horn, or steering wheel-mounted controls not working. In such cases, it is essential to have the clock spring inspected and replaced if necessary to maintain the proper functioning of the airbag and other steering wheel systems.
