THE LMC5 Steering Column Unlocker, Explained.
The LMC5 Steering Column Unlocker is a device used to unlock the steering wheel in 1997 to 2004 Corvette. It is designed to be used in conjunction with the installation of an LMC5 Steering Column Lock Simulator. During the lock simulator installation the LMC5 Steering Column Unlocker is attached to the battery, then the leads are attached to specific vehicle wires. This direct battery connection helps unlock the steering column.
You DO NOT need the LMC5 Steering Column Unlocker if your steering column does not lock at all. This means that the steering wheel can be freely rotated without locking up whenever the key is out of the ignition.
You DO need to use the LMC5 Steering Column Unlocker when installing the LMC5 Steering Column Lock Simulator if:
- Your C5 steering column is currently locked and does not unlock when the key is inserted and turned to the “ON” position.
- Your C5 steering column locks and unlocks normally.
NOTE: If your steering column lock motor is severely jammed or has failed in the locked position, not even the LMC5 Steering Column Unlocker will be able to unlock it. Fortunately, this seems to be a very rare occurrence and the majority of all C5 steering columns can easily be unlocked.
