The C4 Brake Pressure Modulator Valve (BPMV) is a component in the braking system of 1986 to 1991 Corvettes responsible for controlling the hydraulic pressure to the wheels during braking. The BPMV is part of the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) and helps prevent the wheels from locking up during hard braking, which can cause a loss of control of the vehicle.
The C4 BPMV works by sensing each wheel’s wheel speed through sensors located at each wheel. When the system detects a wheel slowing down faster than the others, indicating a possible lock-up, it reduces the hydraulic pressure on that wheel to prevent it from locking up.
The BPMV is also responsible for controlling the pressure on the brake system when the ABS is activated, which can occur in emergency braking situations. The valve helps to rapidly pulse the brake pressure to prevent wheel lock-up and skidding.
Suppose the C4 Brake Pressure Modulator Valve fails or malfunctions. In that case, it can result in reduced or ineffective braking performance, increased stopping distances, or loss of control of the vehicle during hard braking. Replacing a faulty BPMV requires a qualified mechanic and may involve bleeding the brake system to ensure proper function.
Proper maintenance of the ABS, including regular inspections and brake fluid changes, can help prevent potential malfunctions and extend the life of the C4 Brake Pressure Modulator Valve.
This C4 Brake Pressure Modulator Valve Rebuilding Service will include the following:
- Rebuilt Electric 12 Volt Motor
- Cleaned and Reseated Valves
- New O-Rings Installed
- New Stainless Steel Valve Springs Installed
- Bench Testing of the Valves
The Corvette Salvage Crew has written a guide with the necessary steps to perform BEFORE installing the rebuilt Brake Pressure Modulator Valve. Failure to follow these steps will result in a voided warranty for your unit.

The front left brake on my 1987 Callaway Corvette was not fully releasing and the mechanic said there are no replacements for the ABS module. My son, a Toyota engineer, found a link to Dino’s and the rest is history, problem fully, and quickly, resolved!
